January Tidbits

While the 2017 season is still about (gasp!) 7 months away, time is not standing still.

The big news is that Kosti Moni has transferred to Western Michigan.  My worry is that Moni will prove to be the next Christian Ramirez, a player we had in our midst but was underutilized and left.  While one could be left wondering about the future development of any player that leaves prematurely, I had been wanting to see more of Moni in his first two years after seeing flashes of his playing style.  Anyway, I wish Moni the very best at Western Michigan.  On the transfer ledger between the two schools, UCSB is likely ahead after Rob Friend transferred from WMU to UCSB in 2002.

In professional transfer news, it appears that Luis Silva’s stay at Tigres is coming to an end with Silva likely to return to RSL.  This should be a positive move for Silva who could not break into the starting line-up in Mexico.

Spring Schedule

UCSB’s spring schedule is below.

The schedule on UCSB’s website only includes home matches.  I assume the 4/22 match at Santa Clara is still on.

3/3  U17 Mexico at San Marcos HS, 7:00

3/10 Cal State Bakersfield at UCSB, 6:00

4/8  Westmont at UCSB, 6:00

4/15  San Jose State at UCSB, 6:00

4/22  UCSB at Santa Clara

4/29  Alumni game, TBA

5/6   UCSD at UCSB, 6:00

While I’d rather have spring matches than not have them, men’s NCAA soccer would greatly benefit from a split season.  But until the NCAA approves the proposal put forth by Maryland coach Sasha Cirovski, we’re stuck with these poorly attended exhibitions.
